The fact that Obama is pursuing healthcare reform despite many in his own party and beltway elites believing otherwise.
Remember that the during the transition period , many believe that he would abandon healthcare reform due to economic turmoil:
It wasn't the first time that health care had seemed to get short shrift from Obama's advisers. Nor would it be the last. Indeed, there were moments during the transition and the early weeks of the administration when it appeared that the push for comprehensive health care reform might collapse before it had even begun. During this time, a debate raged inside the administration, with some senior officials arguing that the new president should wade into health care gingerly--or even postpone it altogether--because it would cost too much, distract from other priorities, and carry huge political risks.
Some of his advisers thought the same. David Axelrod, Joe Biden and Larry Summers were against implementing healthcare reform. Well Obama is still pursuing healthcare reform. I know many are worried about healthcare reform because right now we are in a state of flux. We have some Democrats who still believe that we can experience a 1994 redux. It also doesn't help that some on the Left are desperately looking for signs of Democratic treachery even when there's no basis in fact. It also doesn't help that some in congress don't take progressives seriously because lets be honest progressives have not been responsible for passing major legislation for the last forty years. So there are many forces to contend with. Despite all this Obama is spending political capital on this because he believes that this is important. By now anybody should know that Obama is not the type to put effort into something unless he believes it can happen. We can't let the intricacies of day to day dealings as a distraction from the long term goal, which is enacting healthcare reform.
No one said it will be easy to get healthcare reform. FDR, Truman, and Clinton failed in implementing healthcare reform. I think people on the Left sometimes forget that change is never easy and thus we get quickly demoralized. We need to be tenacious. Contact your congresspersons. You should also contact the media if you see any piece that is heavily biased or inaccurate. Keep in mind that the media are not in favor of healthcare reform and that they have an interest in portraying Obama as weak or the Democrats as disorderly when some of the facts say otherwise.
